Regional Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters
Tournaments 2011
The Association’s Over 60 and Over 65 squads had a clean sweep at
this year’s divisional tournaments
Our Over 60 and 65 squads created
something of a record for English Regional Masters Hockey when both sides went
through the entire tournament, not only winning all their games against the
other four regions at both age groups, but also not conceding a single goal.
This is unprecedented at either age group, let alone both in the same year.
The Grand Masters were led by
Richard Slator, coached by Andy Barnes and Managed by Ian Russell and although
missing England Over 60 captain Clive Hicks due to injury, were able to include
8 England Masters players in their squad of 15. Perhaps not surprisingly they
proved to strong for the other regions beating the East 3-0, the Midlands 1-0,
the North 3-0 and the West 3-0.
The Great Grand Masters were led by
John Maylam and like the Over 60s were coached by Andy Barnes and managed by
Ian Russell. They included 7 England Masters players in the squad and proved
even more dominant in their group beating the East 3-0, the Midlands 2-0, the
North 2-0 and the West 4-0.
England Selector, Ben Rea, a member
of the South Management Team, was on hand to present the trophies and medals to
both our winning teams.
Both squads were drawn widely from
Clubs all across the region and showed the strength of hockey in the Southern
Counties. The players were selected
after attending South Trial matches. This, in itself, was a major change round
from the position we were in some 5 years ago when Masters Hockey was not taken
seriously. Now England Masters squads are selected every season and play in
World and European Cups at all 7 Masters
male ages as well as playing numerous one off games against other
nations.
